Financial Issues And Mental Health Problems
Dear Reader,
Probably not all that surprising, but new research from the University of Southampton published online at the Clinical Psychology Review has found that those in debt are three times more likely to have a mental health issue than those who are not in debt. Today debt levels are increasing because of the economy and uncertainty, leaving the average US household owing just over $7,000 on credit cards, the third largest source of indebtedness behind the mortgage and student loans.
A regular income is key when it comes to handling debt... without it you can't begin to make any kind of steady payments. You also need to have a good handle on what you owe, and to whom, so if you're not sure, make that list now. The information it provides will give you a realistic picture of where you stand that might not be as dire as the one in your imaginings. Credit counselors (not for profit, such as the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies) can help you understand where you are, and assist you in taking advantage of any legitimate assistance that is out there for you.
To examine the issue of being in debt and mood, a team from the University of Southampton, along with a colleague from Kingston University, conducted a systemic review of all earlier work that examined the relationship between health problems and unsecured debt. This project is the first meta analysis that's been done on this topic and the process included a total of almost 34,000 subjects.
The results found that those in debt were more than three times as likely to have a problem with their mental health than those who were not in debt. No surprise really... the weight of knowing you are responsible for an impossibly large sum is heavy and hard to manage. Under 9% of the subjects with no mental health issues were in debt, compared to over 25% of subjects being in debt and also having a recognized mental health issue.

Financial Issues And Mental Health Problems Continued...
More work needs to be done to see just how debt brings on poor mental health so that interventions can be created to prevent this from happening to those in financial trouble.
It makes sense that those in debt were more likely to suffer from depression, drug dependence and even psychosis; they were trying to cope with the constant stress. The study results also suggest that those who die by suicide are more apt to be in debt as well. Of course, at this stage, it's hard to say which causes which - money issues cause mental health problems or mental health issues leave you more susceptible to money woes.
If you're struggling with debt, know first that you're not alone. There are many who are also feeling your financial pain and there are steps you can take to help yourself. You need to understand your own situation as clearly as you can and take small, manageable steps to take you where you want to go... to being debt free. Once you do this you'll enjoy that amazing feeling of paying your living expenses and having the rest of your income to spend as you wish.
To your good health,
